Sorry, no egg pun here
Of the five steps in the planning process, I feel as though the group I was in completed it fully.
During the 25 minutes of planning, we clearly defined our goal: preventing an egg from breaking on impact as it falls 9-10 feet by using 8 straws and 4-5 feet of tape.
Current status was our resources and details - the straws and tape. Weakness included no scissors, but we came up with a plan that didn't require scissors. Little details such as how far the drop actually was going to be and conditions of an egg shell breaking.
Premises and alternative strategies - What was expected to happen = the egg hits the ground and breaks. We had 8 straws and 4-5 feet of tape to prevent it. 50% of the egg must be showing. I figured that a shell wouldn't work through some spatial reasoning; for example, since the egg was round, it would be extremely difficult to cover all the sides with 8 straws. Also, we chose the shortest person in the group to drop the egg.
Our plan ended up being making not a shell, but an attempt to cover the egg so that it would be "spikey" - the spikes would deccelerate the egg as it hits the ground, so when the actual egg shell hits the ground, it would be slow enough to not break.
Implementing the action: a suspenseful success. Although construction of the contraption was nothing as planned, there was still a very positive outcome.
A very s-egg-cessful outcome indeed. (Dammit, I cracked).

I found it interesting that our strategies were for the most part pretty similar. My group also completed all of the steps in the planning process and similarly to your groups’ strategy we chose the shortest person out of our group to drop the egg. It seems as though your group had a technical difficulty whereas my group had trouble communicating. Once we reached the implementation stage we began to construct our contraption which similarly to your experience did not go as planned. Sadly our egg ultimately cracked once it was dropped.
ReplyDeleteSo you were in the group that did it successfully. Congrats. I feel that my group planned everything out very well, but implement was a bit tougher. Your design was very strange, but hey who am i to criticize, yours was the only one out of the entire that didn't break, so well done.
ReplyDeleteIn my group, our device was not the one originally planned either. It is through the power of improvisation that the device was born. Sadly, it did not yield the same outcome as your group. But congrats to you and your group.
ReplyDeleteMy group did not follow all the steps for planning. We did try to remember to do everything that would let our egg qualify for the egg drop. However, we did have a good plan. Actually my group plan was also to create spikes around the egg so that it would slow down the fall.
ReplyDeleteI knew putting spikes around the egg would be hard because of the shape of the egg. However I didn't realize how small the egg was, which limited how much space we had to work with. In the end it was very hard to make sure 50 percent of the egg was showing. However in the end my egg cracked.
